Plot summary

Karel and Božena Horáková live in an apartment building and learn from a doctor that they cannot have a child. The news leaves Božena inconsolable. While fixing up a country house that Karel has bought on the advice of a neighbor, he digs up a tree stump whose shape suggests a baby. He spends the evening cleaning and varnishing it, then gives it to his wife. Božena names the stump Otík and begins to care for it as though it were her son, and she works out a way to fake a pregnancy so that the neighbors will believe a child is on the way. The stump then comes to life, and its hunger proves far larger than a baby's. Alžbětka, the neighbors' daughter, is suspicious of the couple's new arrival.
