Plot summary
In August 1966, the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat comes under mortar fire at night. Major Harry Smith orders his men to take cover, and the base answers with counter-battery fire. The next morning he volunteers Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, to search the rubber plantation at Long Tân, but Bravo Company goes instead. The following day Delta relieves Bravo, missing a concert by Little Pattie and Col Joye and the Joy Boys. Following fresh tracks, the company moves deeper, and 11 Platoon runs into a small enemy patrol. Heavy fire cuts 11 Platoon off, and it calls artillery down dangerously close to its own position. 10 Platoon cannot break through to it. Ordered to pull Delta out, Smith refuses to abandon 11 Platoon.
