Plot summary
Eyad Barhum, a gifted Palestinian teenager, lives in a small village with his parents, his brothers and his grandmother, and his father picks fruit for a living. Eyad is accepted by an elite Jewish high school in Jerusalem, and his father drives him there, telling him on the way that the Palestinian people once hoped to defeat their Jewish enemies and will now settle for living side by side in dignity. In class the other students mispronounce his name and keep their distance. He helps Naomi with her chemistry work, and the two begin meeting at a cafe. The school sends him to visit Yonatan, a teenager with muscular dystrophy, and the two grow close.
