Plot summary
Buford Turnover has advanced dementia, and his mother-in-law Lois, whom her grandchildren call Mama Wheelis, gathers the family back to the Texas homestead where he lies. Four grown children come. Lurlene, the eldest, is a minister's wife who rarely visits, tries to take charge and reminds her siblings of their late mother. Sara Lee, the middle sister, has stayed to nurse her father with her grandmother's help. Orville drinks and belittles his wife Marlene, while the youngest, Evalita, a six-times married aspiring country singer, brings her boyfriend Harmony and spends her nights singing at the local bar rather than at the homestead.
