Plot summary
Jane Magrew returns from college to The House of Marvels, the doll show her father runs, where Andre Toulon's puppets move on their own. She asks about Matt, her father's helper, and Dr. Magrew claims the young man left to be with his sick father. On a drive to town, the two of them stop a bully named Joey Carp from tormenting Robert Winsley. Jane notices a statue Robert carved, and her father offers him a job on the Marvel show. Robert accepts and meets the living puppets. Magrew, who has never managed to make a puppet live, wants Robert's help carving a new one. Robert takes up the work, and Sheriff Garvey and Deputy Wayburn arrive to ask about Matt, reported missing.
