Biography

Born in Akron, Ohio, J. R. Bookwalter is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer whose work centers on low-budget horror, action, and science fiction. He started in 1985 at age 19 with The Dead Next Door (1989), a Super 8 independent feature shot in Akron across four years. He wrote, directed, edited, and scored it, while Sam Raimi executive produced and Bruce Campbell oversaw post-production sound and voiced two lead characters. The movie built a cult following. Bookwalter also wrote and directed Robot Ninja (1989), a low-budget superhero film that later gained cult status among video collectors. He produced Skinned Alive (1990) and in the early 1990s directed several shot-on-video features, including Zombie Cop (1991), sometimes billing himself as Lance Randas. His later directing work includes Ozone and Polymorph. He also worked for Full Moon Pictures on projects such as Witchouse 2: Blood Coven and Mega Scorpions, and founded Tempe Entertainment.
