Plot summary
Owen Matthews arrives at Westlake Prep, a boarding school near woods where a young woman named Becky has been found murdered. He falls in with the school's unofficial club of liars, among them Dodger and Tom, who play a game of deception called Cry Wolf. Dodger proposes spreading the game across the whole school, and Owen suggests a fake email about a serial killer, The Wolf, who moves from campus to campus killing students. They describe him in an orange ski mask, a camouflage jacket and combat boots, with a knife or a handgun, and name the intended victims as the people they know best, themselves. Their journalism teacher, Rich Walker, cautions them about the predators who hunt on the internet. By morning, the school is repeating the story.
