Plot summary
Estella is a young grifter in 1970s London with a talent for fashion design. She teams up with Jasper and Horace, two thieves who share her appetite for mischief, and the three make a life for themselves on the city streets. A job at the Liberty department store confines her to janitorial work until she redoes a window display, which catches the attention of Baroness von Hellman, a renowned but authoritarian fashion designer. The Baroness offers Estella a position at her fashion house, and Estella accepts. She soon spots her mother's necklace around the Baroness's neck and asks Jasper and Horace to help her get it back. To hide her identity, she creates an alter ego called Cruella and plans to steal the necklace at the Baroness's Black and White Ball.

- Before Emma Thompson was cast as Baroness von Hellman, Disney considered Nicole Kidman its top choice for the role; Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore and Demi Moore were also in the running, and Dev Patel was considered for Roger Dearly.
- Emma Stone was not allowed to have Cruella smoke on screen, because Disney had banned characters from being shown smoking in its films since 2007.
- John McCrea's Artie, a vintage fashion shop owner in Cruella's entourage, was the first original character in a live-action Disney film to be openly gay; the character was inspired by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Marc Bolan.
