Plot summary
Amir leads a lonely life. With his dog for sole company, he drives through the underworld of Tehran, dealing drugs of all kinds and healing troubled souls like a modern prophet. He navigates the city streets aimlessly, following the directions of his GPS while getting high to escape a town with no future. And yet, in his wandering he will find the seed of resistance.

- Ali Ahmadzadeh shot his fourth feature, Critical Zone, in secret on the streets of Tehran without the permission Iranian authorities normally require, hiding the camera or using complicated tricks. Three easily hidden mini cameras were used, and he called the making of it a "big rebellion".
- Two days after Critical Zone was picked for the 76th Locarno Film Festival competition, director Ali Ahmadzadeh was interrogated by Iran's Ministry of Security and accused of shooting a pornographic film. He was pressured to withdraw it, and because the film was shot without government permission his visa to leave Iran was revoked.
- Critical Zone took the Golden Leopard, Locarno's top prize, on 12 August 2023, from a jury chaired by the French actor Lambert Wilson. Because Ali Ahmadzadeh could not travel, his co-producer Sina Ataeian Dena accepted the prize alone.
- Co-producer Sina Ataeian Dena said Ali Ahmadzadeh was under investigation by Iran's security ministry and constantly watched by an interrogator who monitored his text messages, and that he received threatening messages from anonymous sources. He said the sales agent Luxbox and he got similar threats demanding the film not be shown.
