Plot summary
In June 1963, Alabama governor George Wallace announces that he will personally stop Vivian Malone and James Hood, two black students, from enrolling at the University of Alabama. President John F. Kennedy, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach consider how to answer the threat. They hope to keep the crowd calm and deny Wallace the role of segregationist martyr. The response they settle on is to quickly put the Alabama National Guard under federal authority if the students are turned away. That would let Malone and Hood come back and register later the same day, rather than having to wait until the next morning.
