Plot summary
A documentary portrait of Harvey Milk, who moved from neighborhood activism in San Francisco's Castro District to a seat on the Board of Supervisors, the first openly gay person elected to public office in the country. Friends, supporters, reporters and city hall aides recall his campaigns and his years as a political outsider who became an elected official. The film follows his work for gay rights and for broader human rights, including the fight against Proposition 6, the Briggs Proposition, a measure that would have limited the rights of gay teachers in California. Made with original interviews, news reports and archival footage, it sets his career in an era when protections for gay people were being rolled back around the country.
