Plot summary
A documentary about the craft of cinematography and the people who practice it. Directors of photography sit for interviews and illustrate their points with clips drawn from roughly a hundred films, reaching back to the earliest days of the medium. They describe how the person behind the camera decides where an audience should look, and how the arrival of sound, color and widescreen images forced new solutions. The narration follows the recognizable studio styles of the 1930s, the rise of noir, a New York look, and the influence of European filmmakers. Citizen Kane and The Conformist are singled out for close attention.
