Plot summary

Joseph Garner wants to find out whether a person can get by on the generosity of strangers. With the American economy failing in 2008 and the country's sense of community in doubt, he sets up a month-long experiment: he gives up money and anyone he already knows. He leaves Los Angeles with a laptop, a phone with a new number he has shared with no one, a new email address, a passport, a toothbrush and the clothes he is wearing. A cameraman he hires on Craigslist comes with him. Every meal, place to sleep and ride has to come from the connections he makes on the site. He also wants to look at what social media and technology do to how people meet.

  • Joseph Garner came up with the documentary's concept while working as assistant director on The Hangover during the 2008 Great Recession, wondering what would happen if he lost everything but still had great friends and family.
  • Garner hired his cameraman, Kevin Flint, through Craigslist a week before his travels began in Los Angeles; Flint got a food stipend, so he was not completely dependent on Craigslist users.
