Randy is breaking out of prison, and Sampson and the Preacher race to reach him, only to be halted at a roadblock by a shootout with police. While he waits, Randy listens to a fellow escapee, Pappy, who tells of three men much like his friends. In Pappy's animated tale, a bank sells the house of Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear and Preacher Fox to a man with plans to turn it into a brothel, so the three leave the South for Harlem. There they meet Simple Savior, who presents himself as a revolutionary and a relative of Black Jesus and promises his followers strength to kill whites. Rabbit sees through the swindle, and a police officer who collects for the Mafia is sent to find him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Coonskin (1975)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Congress of Racial Equality picketed the Paramount Building in New York City, and its chairman Elaine Parker told Variety in January 1975 that the film "depicts us as slaves, hustlers and whores"; the NAACP described it as a difficult satire but supported it.
  • SPOILERRalph Bakshi said he was incensed by the hero worship of the gangsters in The Godfather, where Pacino and Caan made you like them, and by the mother whose husband gets all her sons killed; in Coonskin she gets her revenge, is shot, turns into a butterfly and is crushed.
  • A longer cut running about 99 minutes, against 83 for the Bryanston version, went nearly unnoticed until early 2023, when Italian YouTuber 151eg, hunting the film's lost Italian dubbing, bought a VHS tape from a private collector and discovered the longer, different version.
  • The Bryanston Distributing Company became the film's new distributor and went bankrupt two weeks after it opened; according to a May 1975 issue of The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Gage was hired to re-record some of Barry White's voice tracks to remove "racist references and vulgarity."
  • In September 2012 Ralph Bakshi incorporated animation from Coonskin into a new short film, Trickle Dickle Down, criticizing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
