Plot summary
Irwin 'Fletch' Fletcher, once an investigative journalist and now a freelance writer, takes a job for a wealthy Italian count whose art collection has gone missing. Two of the paintings have turned up with a Boston dealer, Ronald Horan. In Rome, Fletch meets the count's daughter Angela, and the two begin an affair. Word then arrives that her father has been taken by organized criminals, who are asking for a Picasso out of the collection as ransom. Fletch rents a Boston townhouse for a short stay and finds a dead woman inside, a barista later named as Laurel Goodwin. He reports the crime, and two Boston officers, Sergeant Inspector Monroe and Junior Detective Griz, begin to tail him as their prime suspect. Under a false identity, he approaches Horan about buying the Picasso.
