Plot summary
Hirata is a Japanese businessman whose plan for a golfing holiday in Hawaii changes when his grandfather tells him he should travel to Iceland. His parents drowned there seven years ago, and in Japanese culture that anniversary is significant: the family still living feeds the drowned so that they find peace. He is to hold the ceremony at the river where his parents died, on the island's far side. He speaks no Icelandic and little English, and in Reykjavík he boards the wrong bus, one carrying German tourists headed for the hot springs. After a day of such mishaps he buys an old bright red Citroën for the drive.
