Plot summary
When Oscar Madly is eight, his parents divorce, and he begins speaking with his pet hamster, Buffy. One night he sees a teenage boy attacked by homophobic assailants. Now eighteen, Oscar is applying to a make-up effects program in New York City. He takes a job at a hardware store to spend less time with his father, Peter. A new employee, Wilder, is confident and charismatic, and Oscar feels drawn to him, yet a sharp stomach pain pushes him away. At home, his hamster Buffy remarks that Oscar looks happier and wonders if he is in love. Oscar dismisses the notion.
