Plot summary
Dr. Jane Mathis works as a psychiatrist and specializes in confrontational therapy. Two years ago one of her patients, Nora Green, attacked her in her office and tried to take her own life there. Jane has dealt with PTSD and sleep paralysis ever since, and she sees Dr. Terry Drummond for treatment. She has also begun a relationship with Miles Richardson, a police officer. Against Dr. Drummond's advice she keeps her practice going, though she no longer writes prescriptions. She agrees, reluctantly, to meet Alex, a man whose face was scarred in a car accident. One night she discovers him sleepwalking inside her house and calls the police. Alex asks her to continue their sessions, saying he values her expertise and the way she understands him.
