Plot summary
Hoping for somewhere he can be open about himself, John leaves his job as a cop in a small Illinois town and moves to Los Angeles, staying with his cousin Tad, who is making a documentary about circuit parties. Tad's boyfriend Julian DJs at the parties. At a party in the Hollywood hills John meets Hector, a hustler who is anxious about his looks and his coming thirtieth birthday; Hector draws him into the circuit scene and its drugs. Nina, a comedian and friend of John's who has been living out of her car, moves into his trailer. Tad films Bobby, an HIV-positive dancer, and asks the investor Gino, who runs parties with his wife Louise, for money to finish his film.

Shafer based the character of Hector on a real person who, obsessed with growing older and his looks, killed himself on his 30th birthday.- To show the characters' obsession with youth and beauty, Shafer shot each of them reflected in a mirror, saying that the obsession with images and mirrors was a subtext of the movie.
- Director Dirk Shafer was not part of the circuit party scene but did some experimenting as research for the film, and used circuit party music to guide him in shaping it, picking out what he liked for each sequence.
