Plot summary
In 1989 in Itmann, West Virginia, Christy Salters is a college basketball player who enters a local women's boxing competition and wins it. A local coach, James Martin, approaches her and offers to train her, and though she is unsure at first, her success in the sport keeps her in it. Her secret romance with Rosie, a girlfriend from high school, ends, and her mother, Joyce, is upset by talk around town that Christy is a lesbian, which strains the household. By 1995 Christy and James live in Apopka, Florida, where they marry and run a boxing gym. As her coach and manager, James does not deliver the career connections he promises, but the two arrange a meeting with the promoter Don King and she signs with him. Wins follow, among them one over Lisa Holewyne.
