Plot summary
Tim and Allie are driving when their car breaks down, and they go looking for shelter, coming at last to a desert farmhouse. The Preacher, who lives there with his wife Oksana, also known as Helen, lets them in to use the phone. They learn that no tow service will come until the next day, so the couple is given a bed for the night on two conditions: that they leave in the morning and that they stay out of the places they have not been invited into. Their hosts seem odd to them, and after dinner they go to bed. Allie later slips outside. She finds the garage has been turned into a church for a cult, and at a crumbling outbuilding she hears a child crying faintly.
