Plot summary
The Chernobyl plant's explosion drove the Soviet authorities to evacuate the villages around it, fencing the contaminated land behind barbed wire. Not all of the residents accepted the order. Within months, some were slipping back into the zone, called Samosely, to live in the cottages their families had handed down. They number a few dozen now, very elderly, with no stores, running water or, at times, electricity. Some had no notion of what radiation was; others had helped the first victims of the reactor blast. Since 2017 a fixed group of volunteers has carried aid into the zone.
