Plot summary
Annie and Hannah shared a flat at polytechnic, and six years later Annie arrives in London to spend a weekend with Hannah. Hannah's apartment and her financial success impress Annie, while Hannah is irritated by how far apart the two of them have drifted. Hannah's anger at her mother, an alcoholic, has not faded, and Annie talks about her own mother looking for a new man. Both women remember 1986, when Hannah and Claire chose Annie to share their flat: Hannah loud and forceful, Claire shy, avoiding eye contact and twitching. Ricky Burton, a classmate with awkward manners, lodged with them after his landlord threw him out. In the present, Annie goes with Hannah to look at flats Hannah might buy.
