Plot summary
Each summer the Perlman family takes a graduate student into their villa in northern Italy, and in 1983 the guest is Oliver, a twenty-four-year-old American working on his doctorate, who has come to help Elio's father with his archaeology paperwork for six weeks. Elio, seventeen, fills his days with reading, transcribing music, piano, and his friends Chiara and Marzia. He at first finds little in common with Oliver, who seems confident and carefree, but they take long walks into town, and Oliver joins the family on an archaeological trip. Oliver touches Elio's back during a volleyball match, and Elio brushes it off. Elio is jealous when he sees Oliver kiss Chiara, and he seeks Oliver's company more and more.

- Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet both thought Elio's masturbation scene with a pitted peach was implausible, so each tested the method on his own. To their surprise it worked, so Guadagnino shot the scene and kept it in the film.
- Armie Hammer almost turned down the role of Oliver because the draft script contained nudity. He said there was a lot he had never done on film before, but that he could not turn it down, "mostly because it scares me so much."
- Shia LaBeouf and Greta Scacchi were reportedly set to be cast in 2015, but James Ivory confirmed in September 2016 that they were out. Ivory got along with LaBeouf, who read for the film in New York City, but the production company felt his "various troubles" made him unsuitable.
- The Perlmans' residence was filmed at Villa Albergoni, an uninhabited 17th-century mansion in Moscazzano. Luca Guadagnino wanted to buy the house but could not afford it, so he made a film there instead.
- At the 90th Academy Awards, 22-year-old Timothée Chalamet was the third-youngest Best Actor nominee, and James Ivory's win for Best Adapted Screenplay made him the oldest winner of a competitive Academy Award in any category.
- In March 2018, a distributor in Tunisia reported that the Ministry of Culture had banned the film as an "attack on liberties" because of its subject matter.
- For the final shot, Timothée Chalamet listened to Sufjan Stevens's "Visions of Gideon" in an earpiece and performed three variations of the scene, one per take. The camera was set in the fireplace with nobody behind it.
- After an Italian fan published the coordinates of the filming locations, visiting Crema became a pilgrimage for fans of the film. The city now offers official tours.
