Plot summary
The Citadel is a German fortress, a stronghold that resembles a huge medieval castle and whose firing positions have stopped every attempt by the Soviet army to advance. In 1943, NKGB Colonel Dmitry Arsentiev comes upon Kotov, a former divisional commander, among the ranks of a penal battalion drawn up at its walls. Kotov has been convicted of treason and has survived a prison camp. General Melezhko, drunk, orders the penal soldiers to storm the fortress although the attempt means certain death. Not wanting to meet Arsentiev, Kotov raises the soldiers to the attack before the order; Arsentiev follows under heavy fire, unable to fall back because barrier troops behind shoot at the penal soldiers.
