Plot summary
In 1942, Belarus is under German occupation, and the Germans face the partisans' resistance and the hatred of local people. Sushenya is a track walker whom the partisans suspect of collaborating with the Germans: he was the only worker freed after a group of them derailed a German train. Two partisans seize him and take him into the forest, intending to shoot him. Before the war, his village respected and trusted him, and he raised a family in peace.
