Plot summary
Lieutenants Dan Lynch and Will Stephensen are U.S. Navy fighter pilots and best friends in the same squadron, and both hope to be taken into the space program while they are still young. After two accidents, a government agent named John Cokely comes aboard their carrier to look into the unit's safety record. A third pilot, Matt Blackwood, arrives and grows close to Dan, which comes between Dan and Will. Dan and Matt begin to fall in love, and both know that what they have could cost them their careers. Cokely's inquiry keeps the squadron under pressure, and the other pilots and their spouses are drawn into it.
