Brown Girl Begins (2017) on Netflix

Plot summary

The wealthy took Toronto and walled it, pushing the poor onto an island off the coast that people call The Burn. There the islanders get by on bartering, recycling and farming, and Mami holds them together, sharing Caribbean herb lore and leading an old spiritual practice. Ti-Jeanne is Mami's granddaughter; at nineteen she is meant to succeed her as priestess. That means the possession rite that killed her mother, and Ti-Jeanne refuses it. She runs with Tony, her young love, to the far side of the Burn, hoping to leave the spirits behind. Mami tries to prepare her anyway, and the islanders' survival depends on whether Ti-Jeanne takes up the spirits she fears.
