Plot summary
In a British suburb, eleven-year-old Emily Cunningham, called Skunk, is diabetic and lives with her father Archie, a solicitor, her older brother Jed, and the family's au pair Kasia. Rick, a young man who lives with his parents a few doors away, is one of the few friends she has. Mr. Oswald, another neighbor, is a single father with three daughters. When one of them accuses Rick of rape, Oswald beats him. The girl is shown to have lied, and Rick is released. Afterward he keeps to himself. Kasia's boyfriend Mike teaches at Skunk's school and is a favorite of hers, and the two of them split up.
