Trailer

Plot summary

In 1963, Joe Aguirre, a rancher in Wyoming, hires Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist to take his sheep onto the grazing pastures of Brokeback Mountain for the summer. The two cowboys meet as strangers at the camp, and the suppers and breakfasts they share there turn them into friends. One night, after heavy drinking, they have sex in their tent. Both call it a single incident, yet their relationship becomes sexual and romantic, and it lasts through the season. Ennis is engaged to Alma Beers. In August the job ends early. A brawl leaves the two bloodied, and they part.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Screenwriters Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry pushed for Heath Ledger on the strength of Monster's Ball, but the studio judged him not masculine enough. Casting director Avy Kaufman sent him the script anyway; Ledger called it beautiful and put himself forward for Ennis.
  • Ang Lee met Mark Wahlberg about a part, and Wahlberg turned it down, saying the script creeped him out.
  • Anne Hathaway auditioned for Lureen on a lunch break from The Princess Diaries 2, still in a ball gown and an over the top hairpiece. Ang Lee had not seen her as an obvious choice until that reading, and she won the role partly by lying to him about being able to ride a horse.
  • Alberta's environmental department at first refused to let the crew take domestic sheep into the Rockies in case they passed disease to wildlife. Filming was allowed on a single mountain only if the flock was trucked in and out every day, with a biologist hired to oversee it.
  • Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, pulled the film from his Jordan Commons cinemas in Sandy, Utah in January 2006, calling its portrayal of family dangerous. Focus Features threatened to sue and said it would never do business with him again.
  • The two shirts worn by Heath Ledger's and Jake Gyllenhaal's characters fetched 101,100.51 dollars on eBay in February 2006, with the money going to the children's charity Variety. Buyer Tom Gregory, a film historian, called them the ruby slippers of our time.
  • Annie Proulx, who wrote the original short story, later said she regretted writing it, worn down by the flood of fan fiction rewriting her plot, much of it from men who told her they understood men better than she did.
