Plot summary
True Brandywine rides bucking broncos at rodeos while living on his family's farm in Elko, Nevada with his father George, his mother Kathy and his younger brother Caleb. After a ride he buys painkillers from a competitor who deals drugs. A burn from his truck's engine brings him to Ali, a passing nurse who bandages him; they spend the evening together and he draws her portrait. George, a former Marine, urges True to enlist. At another rodeo True collapses, and a doctor tells him he has traumatic brain injury. Caleb announces he has joined the Marines. Then True comes to beneath the snow in a desolate meadow, his horse Dude missing, his boot dislodged and his foot exposed. His truck is stuck, his foot shows frostbite and his phone has no reception.
