Plot summary
September 1937. Eugene Jerome is almost fifteen and lives in a Jewish household in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, with his mother Kate, his father Jack, his older brother Stanley, his widowed aunt Blanche and her daughters, Nora and Laurie. Blanche moved in with her girls after losing her husband, so Jack took a second job to feed the larger household. Money comes from Jack's two jobs and from Stanley's work at a men's hat shop. Eugene wants college and a writing career, and he is preoccupied with baseball and with seeing a girl undressed. Kate's sister Blanche, an asthmatic, is raising her daughters and is drawn to Frank Murphy, the Irish neighbor. Sixteen-year-old Nora wants a Broadway audition; thirteen-year-old Laurie is sickly. Eugene speaks straight into the camera as he tells the story.
