Plot summary
Lalita Bakshi lives in Amritsar with her family, and her mother is eager to see all four daughters married. At a friend's wedding the family meets Will Darcy, a wealthy American and a long-time friend of the barrister Balraj, who is drawn at once to Lalita's eldest sister Jaya. Darcy takes an interest in Lalita, but she dislikes him, finding him culturally rigid for disparaging the hotel he is staying in and calling arranged marriages backward. When Balraj invites Jaya to Goa, Lalita's father sends her along as well. In Goa the two argue about the roles of men and women and about India's economic future. On the beach that night she meets Johnny Wickham, a Londoner, who confirms her low opinion of Darcy.
