Plot summary
Jennifer Burrows and Ryan Walker met as twelve-year-olds flying from New York to Los Angeles, talked about their parents' divorces, and argued. Four years on, he is the mascot at his Los Angeles high school and she is named homecoming queen at hers; when the two schools meet at a game, he loses his mascot head, she tries to console him, and an offer of coffee ends in another argument. Both end up at UC Berkeley, where Ryan's long-distance romance with Betty falls apart and he gets a roommate, Hunter, who claims to be a ladies' man. Jennifer's musician boyfriend breaks up with her, and she and her friend Amy become roommates. Ryan begins seeing Amy, and Amy asks Jennifer to end it for her. Ryan and Jennifer walk and talk, trade breakup stories, and a friendship forms.
