Plot summary

The war against the Japanese is over, and Jet and the soldiers who fought beside him return to Qingdao to find American troops claiming the victory as their own. Jet looks up Zhang, the comrade who saved his life in battle and was seriously injured by shrapnel, and who now earns a living driving a rickshaw, and moves into his house. Zhang tells him his daughter died. Captain Hans drives recklessly through the streets until an angry mob surrounds his car; he and Jet fight briefly, and the crowd burns the car, touching off a riot. Jet and his friends take shelter in a bar that now caters to foreigners and holds a boxing ring, where the insults of the American Navy patrons provoke a sailor named Bailey to challenge Jet to a formal match.
