Plot summary

René Ferretti is worn down by the TV drama Il giovane Ratzinger, and when the network hands down one more creative demand he leaves the production and drops out of the industry, sinking into depression. Months later his friend Sergio Vannucci, recovering from a heart attack, buys the rights to La casta, a political bestseller, and the two of them want to make a socially engaged film. The network executive Diego Lopez seems ready to approve the project, but the compromises that come with his support push René to abandon the investigative angle for a metaphorical story. New collaborators join him, among them the actress Marilita Loy, and René keeps only Alessandro and Arianna from his old television crew.
