Plot summary
Sherlock Holmes is nearing the end of his career and intends to retire to Sussex, where he means to keep bees. King Edward asks one more service of him: the Star of Africa diamond is to travel to Cape Town, and Holmes is to see it safely there. Dr. John Watson, in his mid-fifties, makes the journey with him and has said he is growing too old for adventures of this kind. In South Africa the detective meets the former president Theodore Roosevelt and Lillie Langtry. The diamond is stolen and several people are murdered.
