Plot summary
Red Snyder, a promoter in Washington, D.C., talks Fannie Belle Fleming, who came from rural West Virginia hoping to sing, into stripping during a performance. She becomes the burlesque performer Blaze Starr, and Earl Long, the governor of Louisiana, takes an interest in her. He brings her to a dinner with his political colleagues and to campaign events. His staff object both to the romance and to his civil rights positions, among them his opposition to literacy tests that were used against voters of color.
