Plot summary
The story is built on the ninth circle of hell in Dante's Inferno. Christmas Eve arrives in the near future, eight days after World War III has ended, and the people who came through it expect nothing more. Kate is the exception. A signal comes over the radio from a voice she does not know, and she answers it; the voice keeps her company as she walks. She has decided to find where the broadcast is coming from. Her route carries her through the isolation and the horror left by the war, and past other survivors whose hopes have failed.
