Plot summary
At eighteen, Laurel finishes high school and leaves for Los Angeles, aiming to begin again after transitioning. She settles into a house shared with Mark, a brother she has drifted from over the years. That first evening they head out into the city, and Laurel winds up at a nightclub run by Duke. There she crosses paths with Izzy, a music video director who rides with Duke's vampire group, and with Duke herself; the two take an interest in her. Izzy asks Laurel along to a party, where an older man trails them. Duke, in the meantime, draws two men aside to feed on, one of them a rapist she has marked.
