Plot summary
Leonard Hoffman is an insurance agent in Los Angeles, and his teenage triplets are gifted musicians whose mother, Arlene, insists they attend Yale. The tuition runs past $40,000, far more than the nearby UCLA would cost, and Leonard cannot pay it. A business call takes him to the Beverly Hills mansion of Steve and Blanche Rickey. Blanche, who meets him there, explains that Steve is dying with less than a week to live and that his life insurance policy has lapsed.

- Big Trouble's plot was so close to Double Indemnity's that Columbia Pictures had to ask Universal, holder of the rights, to let it reuse that plot, and the deal struck by Universal executive Frank Price gave Universal ownership of the script for Back to the Future.
- Andrew Bergman wrote Big Trouble's original screenplay and was set to direct until John Cassavetes was hired; Cassavetes called it "the aptly titled Big Trouble" because the studio vetoed many of his decisions and re-cut the film against his wishes.
- Andrew Bergman said the ending was never fixed and the film was rushed, and as a result he asked to be billed as Warren Bogle on the finished film.
