Plot summary
A library in Massachusetts invites Tess Thorne, a writer of crime mysteries, to a meet-and-greet with readers. She is afraid of flying, so she drives herself. Afterward Ramona, who ran the event, points her toward a faster route home, one that passes a remote stretch by an abandoned gas station. There Tess's car runs over nail-studded planks and a tire goes flat, with no cell signal to call for help. A stranger in a pickup pulls over and offers help, then turns violent. He hits her, rapes her and chokes her unconscious, and when she comes to, he is gone. Fearing a scandal that would destroy her reputation, she walks to a store, phones a limousine company to take her home, and decides to tell no one. Safe at home, she sets out to avenge herself.
