Plot summary
A forensic pathologist, Arun Kumar, recounts the life of Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes to his wife, Nandini. Susanna, an Anglo-Indian woman, longs for love and marries repeatedly, but each husband carries a flaw. Her father's last wish was that she wed Major Edwin Rodriques, a jealous army officer who lost a leg. Edwin blinds her mute stableboy, Goonga Chacha, with a whip. Susanna then weds singer Jamshed Singh Rathod, who renames himself Jimmy Stetson and falls into drugs and theft. Her loyal maid Maggie Aunty, butler Galib Khan, and Goonga Chacha remain by her. Arun has adored Susanna since their childhood.

- The story of Susanna, the film's femme fatale, is based on a real woman who lived in Bengal; her grave is in Chuchura, the district town of Hooghly in West Bengal.
- At Vishal Bhardwaj's request, Ruskin Bond turned his short story "Susanna's Seven Husbands" into an 80-page novella, which later became a 200-page full-length Hindi script.
- Mohanlal was cast as one of Susanna's husbands but left the project to concentrate on Malayalam films, and Annu Kapoor replaced him as Inspector Keemat Lal.
- Priyanka Chopra's Susanna ages from 20 to 65, so Vishal Bhardwaj hired Greg Cannom, the makeup artist behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to create seven looks; she found playing the 65-year-old hardest.
