Plot summary

Simi guides a community group of British Punjabi women on a day trip to the Blackpool Illuminations. Her feminist views draw objections from the older club women, and tradition and modern life divide the group. Ginder has left an abusive husband and is raising her young son alone; the boy wants his father back. Two teenage girls anger the conservative ladies by arranging to meet workers from a burger bar after their shift. Hashida is headed for medical school but would rather paint, and she has kept her boyfriend Oliver, who is Afro-Caribbean, secret from her family for a year; she is expecting his child, and they face the disapproval their relationship may bring. Asha, a Hindu who loves Bollywood, works in a convenience shop and meets an eccentric actor in Blackpool, though she feels bound to her marriage.
