Plot summary
During their last year of high school, Maya and Anjali perform at a talent show. The act goes over well until a drone Maya programmed malfunctions and hits her in the head, and the moment circulates widely online. As UCLA freshmen the two face awkward first-day moments: people call Maya drone strike girl, and an argument over college money ends with Anjali's mother striking her. At a mixer held by the South Asian Student Association, Maya meets Arjun, a childhood friend now in his second year. Anjali is drawn to the school's Bollywood-fusion team, UCLA Agni, and to its leader, Ronak, but the practice schedule alarms her. Maya, who pictures herself as a lead dancer, enters them both in the team's tryouts.

- To make the collegiate Bollywood-fusion dance circuit accurate, writers Hasan Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam interviewed several South Asian women who had competed in those competitions. The two had previously collaborated on Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
- Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia, cast by July 2025, went through four months of dance training to prepare for the film's dance sequences.
