Plot summary
Five dogs and their owners converge on Philadelphia for the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. Gerry and Cookie Fleck come from Florida with their Norwich Terrier, Winky, having left a credit card bill unpaid, and end up sleeping in the hotel storage room; along the way, Cookie keeps meeting former lovers who try to win her back. Meg and Hamilton Swan, from a Chicago suburb, dote on their Weimaraner, Beatrice, and take her to a psychotherapist. Harlan Pepper, who runs a fishing goods store and hopes to work as a ventriloquist, brings his bloodhound, Hubert. Sherri Ann Cabot, the trophy wife of elderly Leslie Ward Cabot, has trainer Christy Cummings handle her Standard Poodle, Rhapsody in White. Scott Donlan and Stefan Vanderhoof arrive with their Shih Tzu, Miss Agnes.

- Christopher Guest said in a 2000 interview that they originally thought it would be easier to film at an actual dog show, but nobody would let them; Eugene Levy said they had to stage their own show, putting everything together from scratch, getting somebody to organize it, and finding dogs and trainers.
- The greater part of the film was improvised by the actors with little to no planning, and sixty hours of footage were filmed, as was the case with Christopher Guest's previous mockumentary Waiting for Guffman.
- Best in Show was the inspiration for the broadcast of the National Dog Show, which has aired on NBC each Thanksgiving since 2002.
- To celebrate Halloween 2022, the former Victorious castmates Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies recreated several scenes from the film, each dressed as multiple characters, and their October 28 Instagram post drew praise from Jennifer Coolidge.
- The film opened to a weekend gross of $413,436 in 13 theaters, an average of $31,802 per theater, then expanded to 497 theaters and ended its run with $18,715,392 domestically and $2,074,164 abroad, for $20,789,556 in total.
