Plot summary
In the early sixth century, Hrothgar, king of the Danes, and his warriors chase a large, burly man they judge to be a troll to a cliff above the sea. They shoot him dead; his body falls to the beach. The king sees the man's young son, Grendel, and lets him live. Grendel later takes his father's head, and when grown he plans revenge. When twenty of Hrothgar's warriors are found dead in his hall, Hrothgar sinks into despair. Beowulf, a warrior of Geatland, gets King Hygelac's leave to sail to Denmark with thirteen Geats and kill Grendel. Hrothgar welcomes them, but the village is in deep grief, and an Irish monk has led many pagan villagers to Christianity. Selma, a witch, tells Beowulf that Grendel has no wrong to avenge against him.
