Plot summary
Lisa McVey, seventeen, lives in Tampa, Florida, with her grandmother Diane and Diane's boyfriend Morris Elwood, who abuses her while Diane ignores it. Lisa works at a doughnut shop. On the night she has decided to end her life, she is seized by Bobby Joe Long, who assaults her in his car and brings her to a studio apartment, where he binds her and covers her eyes. While he sleeps she lifts the blindfold and memorizes what she can of him and the rooms, and she treats him with kindness to earn his trust, pressing her fingers on the bathroom surfaces and tucking hairs beneath the bed. Diane reports her missing, guessing she has run away.
