Trailer

Plot summary

Jo owns Belgica, a pub in Ghent that draws a mixed crowd. His brother Frank holds shares in a used car business, and the two men are estranged because of an abusive, alcoholic father. Frank drops by one evening and keeps coming back. When the warehouse next door comes up for sale, he talks Jo into buying it and turning it into a dance hall. They become equal partners, each with half the business. To raise his share of the money, Frank sells his stake in the car business, but his partner can pay only a small part of the sum right away, with the rest promised in a few months. Inspectors approve the new dance hall for eighty people at most, since the only legal exit opens onto a narrow alley.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Belgica is drawn from the director's own family: Felix Van Groeningen's father, Jo Van Groeningen, opened the Ghent pub "Charlatan" in 1988, and many events in the film really happened, from friends working as staff to the neighbouring house being turned into a dance room.
  • Soulwax, the band formed by Ghent's Dewaele brothers, wrote 15 pieces specifically for Belgica, composing in a different style for each of the sixteen fictional bands that perform at the club in the film.
