Plot summary
The sisters of a convent appear to be ordinary nuns, though the hours they spend away from prayer are not what their calling suggests. The priest who hears their confessions is zealous for strict observance, and he encourages the abbess, Flavia Orsini, to impose on the convent the strict rules applied elsewhere. The abbess is equally zealous and takes up the enforcement of that discipline among the women in her care.
